Check the Cutting Board’s Care Instructions Before Putting It in the Dishwasher

A cutting board fits neatly into the dishwasher rack, but fitting is not the same as being suitable for the cycle. The board’s material, construction and manufacturer’s instructions determine the appropriate cleaning method.

John Boos states that its wood cutting boards are not dishwasher safe. That is a useful reminder to consult product-specific guidance. Do not transfer the care instructions for one wooden, plastic or composite board to another simply because they look similar.

Find the product’s care information

Check the packaging, marking or manufacturer’s page for the exact model. Look for restrictions on dishwasher use, soaking, drying and maintenance products. A vague claim that a board is easy to clean does not answer whether it can withstand a particular dishwasher cycle.

If the instructions permit machine washing, follow any placement and temperature guidance. If they require hand washing, clean it as directed and dry it appropriately. Do not leave a board soaking while assuming that extra time in water must make it safer.

Inspect the surface as part of cleaning

Look for cracks, separation, warping or damage that makes the board difficult to clean or unstable on the worktop. Ask the manufacturer about repair or replacement where necessary. Oiling or conditioning a board is not a substitute for cleaning it after food preparation.

Keep raw-food handling and cleaning routines consistent with recognised food-safety guidance. A board’s attractive finish or care label does not remove the need to prevent cross-contamination between raw ingredients and ready-to-eat food.

Make the household rule easy to follow

If several people use the kitchen, identify which boards belong in the dishwasher and which do not. Keep the care instructions with other kitchen information. The most effective maintenance routine is one everyone can repeat without guessing at the end of a busy meal.
